Why use DIY Build Calc?
Shows its work
Every result comes with the formula and the numbers used, so you can check the estimate yourself or explain it at the store counter.
Built for real measurements
Enter feet and inches as you read them off the tape, including fractions like 6 1/2. There's nothing to convert by hand.
Honest assumptions
Coverage rates, bag yields and waste allowances are spelled out on every page, and you can change them to match your product.
How to measure for a home improvement project
Accurate estimates start with accurate measurements. Use a 25 ft tape measure, write each number down on a rough sketch, and measure everything twice.
- Rooms: measure wall to wall at floor level. Measure closets and alcoves as separate rectangles.
- Walls: measure height from floor to ceiling, and count doors and windows.
- Outdoor areas: measure the longest length and width. For curved beds, a rectangle that covers the bed gives a slightly generous estimate.
- Depth and thickness: measure in inches. The calculators convert to feet for you.
Most projects need some extra material for cuts, breakage and settling. The calculators include a sensible default waste allowance that you can adjust.
